To obtain an apostille from the Virginia Secretary of the Commonwealth in Richmond please take a moment to review the guidelines:
Considerations for vital records: birth, marriage and death certificates must be issued by the State registrar or deputy registrar at the Virginia Department of Vital Records within the last year (12 months)
Please note that Marriage Certificates may also be issued by the Circuit Court with a “triple seal” with seals from the Clerk and Judge of the Circuit Court.
Please note that a death certificate issued by the Department of Health (black and white copy) can be apostilled if the death happened less than four weeks from the time the apostille is requested.

Considerations for notarized documents: please ensure the notary public stamps, dates and signs the notarization within the last 12 months. The notary must also include an acknowledgement.
Considerations for business documents: issued by the State Corporation Commission, must be issued within the last 12 months.
Considerations for Academic documents: issued by the University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University, The College of William & Mary and James Madison University among others should be notarized.
